September Book Shelf

This month we have been busy adjusting to back to school. Back to school means more time for mommy and mini reading during our commutes. JustaBXgirl is just starting to read so she reads on our way home to me and I read to her during our morning commute. Our school commute is an hour each way. We get way over the twenty minutes of suggested daily reading time. Here is some of what I’ve been reading with and without JustaBXgirl.

The Princess of 42nd St – When I was a child Times Square wasn’t the type of place you planned a family visit to when in the City. It was riped with XXX stores offering all types of adult pleasure. There weren’t costumed characters walking the streets. They were very different types of streetwalkers back then. This book is about how Romola Hodas, daughter of the man behind that Times Square survived childhood and growing up with mobsters trying to kidnap her. This story was raw. There wasn’t sugarcoating. You can feel the pain this woman went through but you can also see how she has risen to be okay despite her childhood.

Time To Parent– I need an accountability partner to read this book with. It is no secret that I have needed to find my balance in this parenting world. I love that this book gives strategies that can be implemented. I just have to admit that without an accountability partner I might try a few then let my overscheduled life take me under.

Captain LaPlank: The Perfect Pirate – JustaBXgirl is a perfectionist. This was a great read for her. It delivered a valuable message to her in a very well written way. It is humorous enough to keep your littles giggling while teaching them that perfection is something that pirates (and them) can’t choose.

Bumblebee At Superhero High– Bumblebee is JustaBXgirl’s favorite superhero. Whenever I see anything with her I pick it up because I know it will make her happy. I can say that this book made me smile as well. It was a great read showing the importance of friendship among other important messages. One of my favorite messages was about believing in yourself.

Goddess Girls Medea The Enchantress – I knew we enjoyed this book but I didn’t realize just how much until I was sharing the messages I took from it with a friend. JustaBXgirl also asked if we can get more of this series. It is a great way to introduce Greek mythology to our littles. The other big takeaway from this book was about friendship and who is a friend. Medea has a frenemy that has always seemed more enemy than frenemy. It was really interesting to me to listen to JustaBXgirl decipher the relationship for herself.

Ever After High: Secret Diary Of Apple White – JustaBXgirl is a fan of Ever After High so when we saw this book at the library it was her choice to take home. And we weren’t disappointed. Just like the episodes and movies, this was a cute story of Apple White and her friends.
