Back To School Prep: Hot Dots JR Pete The Cat

  • pete the cat, hot dots, educational insights

We received this product for review purposes. As always all opinions are honest and those of my own.

I’m always looking for ways to prepare JustaBXgirl for school.  I feel like I’ve been preparing her since she could hold a crayon.  Maybe that’s why she rarely goes out of the line when coloring.  Even still, with this being her first time going to a formal school setting I’ve been a bit nervous.  What if my baby is behind all of the littles that have been going to daycare and having daily lessons since two?

I don’t worry about if JustaBXgirl is intelligent.  This child can teach lessons on sea life, jungle animals and toy brands.  She knows about a variety of subjects but still has trouble picking up some of the basics.  One recent way I’ve been trying to help her prep for when she goes to school next month is with Hot Dots Jr Pete The Cat Kindergarten Rocks! Set.  Now,  I didn’t know JustaBXgirl knew who Pete The Cat was when we got this set but she was already familiar with the character.  I know my godson was obsessed with him a few years ago.

I had seen Hots Dots in action before but hadn’t gotten to play with them myself.  I can share we will be getting more.  The one set we have is Kindergarten designed for children age 5 – 6.  JustaBXgirl is 4 and entering Pre-K so she couldn’t do it completely independently which is fine because I like her equating work time to mommy time a little as it makes her enjoy it more.  I read the problems and she (and Pete) solve them.

I like how easy it is for the little to tell if they got the answer correct or not.  Pete’s eyes light up.  An added bonus to me is that littles have to really pay attention to where they touch the Pete Pen to on the book.  If you do not mark the correct dot specifically it cannot tell that you are in the general vicinity of the correct answer.  I think this is an added bonus and helps with hand eye coordination.

We took this learning tool with us on two recent trips and an overnight visit to Abuela’s house.  JustaBXgirl feels like a big girl when she packs her “homework” or shows us how much she knows.  I also adore that the Pete The Cat pen works with other Hot Dots books.  We will be getting others  to keep complementing the school lessons.  Hopefully, JustaBXgirl won’t realize that she’s doing extra school work.

Learning definitely just doesn’t take place in school. It starts at home. I love how you are preparing JustaBXGirl and her teachers for success in learning!

Pete the Cat is awesome and definitely a new favorite at our house. You are not alone at wondering if they are prepared. I found myself wondering how he would know how to get to the cafeteria for lunch or that he has to raise his hand and ask to use the restroom.

Eek, I didn’t even think of the bathroom thing! They eat in her classroom at her school so I don’t have to fear the cafeteria at least until next year.

Pete the Cat is the best. The Kid is still obsessed with him. I think this is great way to prepare. Also it looks like a way to improve Fine motor skills for children. I will be sharing this post and information with the Occupational Therapists in the Kid’s school
