This is my first year as a “school mom” and I’ll let you in on a little secret…I’m already freaking out and we still have about three weeks before school begins. There’s just so much to do and to get used to. One tip I’ve picked up along the way from friends with older littles is to label EVERYTHING. Everything you ask? Everything they say. So I’ve been spending the last couple of days labeling away.

JustaBXgirl’s school sent home a preliminary supply list when we went on the school tour a few months ago. Since then I’ve slowly started gathering items and now I’m kind of embarrassed to admit she probably has enough supplies for three students. Even though she has extras, we’ll call them backups so I don’t sound completely insane, I want to ensure that as much of her items as possible return home with her as possible.
That’s where Mabel’s Labels come in. When I was a child I used to leave jackets, bags, books and pretty much anything that wasn’t attached to me at school, the playground and cafeteria almost daily. Most of the time there was no way to track any of the lost things. Now we label! Yup, I have already gone label crazy.

My niece called me out on my excessive labeling when I tagged each piece of JustaBXgirl’s uniforms. She was like, “um do you think she’s going to come home without wearing pants?” Point taken, but the school did ask for us to supply them with a labeled set of clothing so at least this way I can send any set I want! And even with my insane amount of labeling I have leftovers using the Little Kid School Combo pack.
The Little Kid School Combo comes with:
- 40 Mini Custom Name Stickers: 1-1/2″ x 5/16″
- 50 Tag Mates™ Stick On Clothing Labels: 13/16″ x 3/8″
- 12 Preschool Shoe Labels (6 pairs): Varied
- 2 Personalized Mini Tags: 1-1/4″ x 3/4″
We’ve decided to hold onto the mini tags for when the weather gets chillier and JustaBXgirl picks out her new jacket and coat. She is really excited about the shoe labels because her personalized labels include not only her name but this mama’s phone number. That means she no longer has to keep on of my business cards in her shoe! Yup, whenever we go out places she will have one of my cards in her shoe and most times a second card in a pocket or a bag. She knows my name and phone number but I have come to realize that sometime adults do not listen to hear what a child is saying. There have been countless times where JustaBXgirl has said her name to people and they respond with something that in no way sounds like her name.
Being able to let her out without a business card is an added perk to including my number on her labels. I figured that if she loses an item at school people might know who she is but if she loses that same item somewhere else it will just become a found item with a name. I’m hoping if she loses an item on the way to one of her after-school activities or to an event and someone finds it they will call the number on the item. It might be wishful thinking but it might also save me from a meltdown when/if she loses her favorite water bottle, sweater or even toy! Since I have extra labels I will be using them to label some of her favorite items outside of school supplies…think iPad, plushies, pocketbooks and more!
