Valentine’s Day and mid-winter recess are around the corner in NYC. That means that this mama is trying to make plans to keep my sanity and keep JustaBXgirl entertained. This year has already had us busy but we haven’t had a lot of time to simply spend time together so I am excited that we will be having a mommy-daughter date to the theater. We will be going to see The Little Match Girl.
Do you know that story? It is originally from Hans Christian Anderson. I wasn’t familiar with it before being invited to check the show out. I know, how is that possible when Disney did an adaptation? This show is a musical adaptation from Yaya Kids Theater and Ting Wang. Here’s the summary from the Telecharge page where you can purchase your tickets:
The Little Match Girl Summary
The Little Match Girl, seeing is believing.
A poor lonely girl is forced out on the streets by her cruel father on New Year’s Eve to sell matches. Cold and alone, with few prospective customers she has to decide between warmth and her father’s wrath. Her decision takes on her on a magical journey.
The Little Match Girl, the iconic story by Hans Christian Anderson, comes to life in this brand new musical adaptation, set to a contemporary score filled with soaring melodies. It’s New Year’s Eve, and the Little Match Girl is forced onto the streets to sell matches to support her family. Cold and alone, her wondrous imagination takes her away from the harsh realities and struggles of her daily life. Armed with match sticks and music, she finds the hope we all need.
We have been doing a lot of speaking about blessings and privilege recently and I think that learning this story is a wonderful way to revisit those discussions. The show has a limited run. It will be playing at St. Luke’s Theater from 2/13 – 2/23/2020.
